Getting Started with a Plant-based Diet

“Plant-based.” You have started to hear the phrase everywhere, whether it’s part of your BFF’s new year’s resolutions or on the label of the almond milk brand at Whole Foods. It sounds simple enough, right? Eating plant-based means your diet consists largely of vegetables, grains, pulses, or other foods derived from plants, rather than animal products. This is NOT the same as being vegan, which eliminates all animal products in your diet. You may be asking yourself, what’s the point? Why would anyone go through the trouble of being plant-based? Well, check out this list of the health benefits of eating a plant-based diet before you count yourself out.

Lower blood pressure

Studies have shown a diet with more plants and less (or no) meat reduces blood pressure and therefore decreases the risk for conditions such as type 2 diabetes or stroke.

Healthier heart

Eating a plant-based diet will have you decreasing your consumption of animal products; therefore, decreasing your body’s intake of saturated fats. Combine that with an increase of whole grains, fruits, and veggies, and your heart will be thanking you.

Decreased risk of cancer

Studies have shown that eating a plant-based diet provides your body with the protective benefits found in fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, and legumes. This will ultimately lead to a healthier weight and lowers the risk of some cancers.

This means you will make an effort to incorporate more plant-based eating into your diet without fully eliminating animal products.

Following these simple tips can get you started in more plant-based eating:

  • Swap dairy ice cream for SweetPea (you saw that coming, right?!)
  • Enjoy plant-based milk instead of cow milk. This includes oat, almond, soy, coconut, or cashew milk.
  • Prepare a flax or chia egg to replace a regular egg! You won’t believe the consistency these seeds will produce once combined with water.
  • Use nutritional yeast instead of cheese. 
  • Sub mayo with hummus or avocado slices.
